KW Lee Spirit Award Thank You Speech

    1)   The only time in my life My Father cried in front of me was when I was in 7th grade.   He told of how grew up in absolute poverty in Busan, and was sometimes so hungry and was so in pain, because his mother, my grandmother was starving so he could eat.   and he would cry.   How many of us have cried in pain because we were hungry?   When was the last time we were starving and we didn’t know when we’d receive our next meal?   When you see tears streaming down the face of your father, your hero, how do you not shed tears yourself?   He always reminded me how spoiled I am… how spoiled we are in America, living on the fruits of generations of labor, bloodshed, war, poverty, and centuries of disciplined, dedication to education with God fearing morals… and he reminded me now… we forget to Thank God.

I Thank God for my dad.  He came to America with no money and limited English and studied day and night for over a decade  to receive a Masters and Ph.D.  He is now one of the most well known pastors and authors in Korea.  He lost his dad when he was 6 to an accident  but he was the best dad to me because he loved my mom. I don't care about all of his awards, degrees, and church accolades. The thing he kept most real is he loved my mom. Its their 50 year anniversary this year. They say the best thing you can do for your children is love your wife. I hope to do the same and its because of my dad.    My parents are the #1 reason why The Kollaboration movement exists. My dad started a church with one family in 1976, the year I was born, and grew it to 3,000 people by 1996.   He always showed me if you don't have a vision, you don't have anything.  My dad is proof that if you have a vision, faith and hard work will lead to great things.   Thank you Dr. John Euiwhan Kim, you are a true underdog who became a champion.

    2)  When I was 9 years old, in 4th grade, I had chicken pox and I would itch them off at night while I was sleeping and it would leave scars.  One morning I woke up and my mom was next to me holding my arms down and I looked at her surprised…  “Uhmma, what you doing?”    And looking at the expression on her face, she didn’t have to say anything.   She was next to me holding my arms down all night so I wouldn’t scratch the chicken pox off and leave scars.   My entire childhood is filled with stories like these.    They say the only time a man is allowed to cry is when his mother passes away.   That is one day I do not look forward to and it makes me cherish every conversation, hug, and time I spend with my mother.  I love others because she showed me love.   Mrs. Kim Won Soon, mother of five, grandmother of 7…  soon to be 8.   Thank you.  You are the beautiful queen that is the foundation of our family.

When I was a senior in high school, my parents returned to Korea and have been there ever since for the past 14 years. Like many second generation Asian Americans, my parents I can’t really connect or speak much…  we know we love each other but throughout my childhood, growing up, out of the many activities my parents love…  one thing stands out… PING PONG.  They looove ping pong.  Our family loves ping pong, we always have it on our backyard, we play it competitively, ferociously, we play it like it’s the Olympics, sweat flying, my dad taking his shirt off…  my dad would come back from early morning prayer and WAKE ME UP to play ping pong…  and I would say… but I don’t wanna play ping pong…    It would be 7am.. freezing cold… I’d be playing with my hand in my pocket…  and my dad would yell at me,  “Sohn bbae!”  Take your hand out of your pocket when you play your dad…   at the time I was such a spoiled teenager… annoyed… and now looking back…   those were some of the best times of my life.  Because my dad was spending time with me… he playing catch with me, Asian style.

    3)  I’m the last of 5 and I have the best two older brothers and sisters anyone could ask for.   My older sisters Hannah and Esther are like my second moms… Mom’s no matter what you call them for… they only say…  Have you eaten… are you eating ok?    It doesn’t matter what you tell them…    Nuna… I’m accepting the KW Lee Spirit Award today!   Uhhh gurae…. Are you cooking at home?  What are you eating?   Are you eating vegetables?    My oldest brother Sam, who is here today with my sister in law Eun mee hyungsoonim…   and my older brother Dan Korea  always took me so many places with them growing up…  bowling,  movies, church events, but one thing stands out the most… baseball games   Dodger games, Angel games…   When people ask me why do you love The Dodgers so much?  The answer is simple:    Its because my older brothers took me to Dodger games growing up.   With my brothers and I, Sports is not just a game… it’s a way of life… it’s a reminder of good times spent together.    I can’t wait to take my kids to Dodger games and its all because of my older brothers.   Life is just like baseball…  no matter how many times you fail, you have to keep swinging the bat, because if you keep swinging, eventually you’ll get a hit and like tonight, sometimes it’ll be a homerun.    Hannah nuna, Sam Hyung, Esther nuna, and Dan Hyung.  Thank You.

    4)  Through my brothers and sisters I have two brother in laws and two sister in laws that are amazing and have been so kind to me…  and 7 nephews and nieces that I adore and some of them are now taller than me.  Boo.   Eric hyung, Eun  Mee hyungsoom, Kyu Sam Hyung, Hanna hyungsoonim,  and Janice, Andrew, Brandon, Patrick, Eunice, Matthew, and Samantha… Thank you so much.

    5)  My mother in law raised three children solo for most of her life.    She had one girl, named Tammy then 11 months later, another girl, Carol, then a year later, John.   She raised these rambunctious, crazy kids while practicing as a pediatrician and instilled within them strong principles to guide them for life.   Like my parents, she is one of the) most principled people I’ve ever met and I respect her highly.   Before I asked her daughter’s hand in marriage, she took me on all day hike up Angeles Crest and we also did another all day hike in the desert.   I was dying but then I found out she does this Regularly.  She is a remarkable person.    Dr. Jung Hi Kim,  Thank you for making us amazing food and raising your daughter who has the biggest heart and stubborn principles.    Thank you for raising Carol and John.  They are the younger sister and brother close to my age that I’ve always wanted.

    6) Over six years ago, I was with my friend Jae Shin, who is here today, and I saw this girl who was cute.  She was looking around for her friends and I proceeded to use a line which could possibly be the most cheesy line ever…

I asked her, Are you looking for me?   After she rolled her eyes, I asked for her #.  She gave me a # which I thought was fake and 6 years later we always laugh about it…  little did I know that putting myself out there would reward me with a brilliant wife who is now pregnant with our first child.   The moral is:  Who cares if you get rejected… what if you miss out on something beautiful for life ?  You’re going to let the next Joe  (apology if your name is Joe)   you’re going to let the next person take what could be yours just because you’re scared?   Life is short…  I cannot imagine my life without the greatest memories ever shared the past six years with my better half…  so many discussions and so much laughter.  Sometimes we laugh so hard we’re like kids…   Sometimes when we’re in the car, we sing cheesy songs at the top of our lungs...  sometimes we do this hip hop dance where we raise one knee at a time and I am clearly the undisputed champion at this.     There’s What I really love about her is how loyal she is to her family and friends and how passionate she is on social injustices.   I call her megaphone because those close to her know when she gets passionate, she gets REALLY passionate and she desires for what is right.   There are so many instances of this but I’ll share one that stands out…  When we were first dating I was scheduled to take her younger brother out one night and I had to change plans because of something else that came up.  She got in my face and was so angry at me for flaking on her brother and unleashed her fury at me… She really let me have it… and ladies and gentlemen… that was the moment I fell in love with her.   Mrs. Tammy Kim, my future baby’s mama…  You’re a warrior. THANK YOU so much because without you, I do not eat.  Literally.  I can’t cook.   I love you very much.

    7) Through Tammy I met the Granada Girls who are represented here today by Linda Lee.  The Granada girls are fiercely loyal… never start a cake fight with one of them or you’ll be going against ALL of them.  They are beautiful, intelligent, and open minded.  I have truly grown as a person by spending time with them and have seen that in the past some of my views may have been somewhat male chauvinistic.   I believe in women’s empowerment and the women’s right’s movement because of my wife and The Granada Girls.

    8)   Two of my friends who are here today are two of the buffest guys I know.   Jae Shin and David Ban… their bodies are evidence of hard work and discipline.  I respect them much for this and I know if I go out with them and someone wants to fight me, they will protect me.   I can’t protect them but I can tell jokes.   This is the beauty of friendship.   Mind, body, and soul are connected and everyone in the crew has something to offer.   Sometimes you just need your friends to be there.   Some friends don’t know how to be there.   What I am truly thankful for is all the times my friends have come to Kollaboration, Laugh Factory, Improv, Icehouse, and so many more events.   Mark, Jae, Dave, Helen, Chris, the whole crew…  so many events… so many times you’ve listened to my same jokes.   Thank you for laughing anyways and for being there.  I appreciate you guys, more than you know.

    9)  Lastly, I dedicate this award to Rina Lee, Roy Choi, Christine Kim and every Kollaboration staff member in every city the past eight years.  Rina Lee is the staff member that has been with Kollaboration from the very beginning in the year 2000 and her loyalty, passion, and positive attitude is a large reason why Kollaboration exists.     Roy Choi became my partner a few years ago and has invested his finances and time and has been a wise older brother who has stabilized the Kollaboration movement into a non profit organization.   Christine Kim is one of the most organized, thoughtful people I know and is truly gifted in administration like no other.  There is no way we’d be where we are without her.   The growth of Kollaboration is largely due in part to the Kollaboration Staff and especially these three individuals.

I remember the year 2000, I first met with Rina and Sandee, another staff member, eight years ago.  We met at a Coffee Bean in Westwood and I shared with them my vision of Kollaboration and what I wanted to do.   Sometimes all you need is someone to believe in you and even though other people were asking me, “Why are you doing this?”   Rina and Sandee were asking, “When are we doing this? And What can we do?”    That year Rina not only danced in the show multiple times but she helped organize it.   We always laugh about it now because little did we know that eight years later, we would be in six cities annually.   One thing Rina shared with me is that there have been times when she was down and she would think, “At least I’ll always have Kollaboration.”   Awesome.

Before Roy asked me to make him a partner for Kollaboration, he asked me to a dinner.  It was at Taylor’s Steakhouse in Koreatown, a dimly lit, romantic restaurant with candlelight.   I was skeptical of our meeting because the place was just so dark!    But as time went on, and as I got to know Roy, the light got brighter and he was a God sent.  A friend and older brother who would financially stabilize our mission.   He not only became my partner for the show but one of my groomsmen when I got married and I was one of his.   Amazing.

Once Roy and I became partners, we needed a webmaster and I asked Christine to be our fulltime webmaster at an Applebees in Temple City.  We both lived in Temple City at the time and I took it as a sign… because who in the world lives in Temple City other than Christine?   Christine is a perfect example of trustworthy friend.  She is so well organized and always there to take care of things that slip through the crack.  For that she has become the MVP of our staff.  She does so much for us and has become a sister to me.   You can count on her and that is priceless.

If I never started Kollaboration, I never would have met these three friends who have become my family so I am Grateful.   Kollaboration is more than the show itself, its the family that works to make it happen.

    10)    Oh one more person…  Thanks to Kobe Bryant for proving me wrong.  Hard work and dedication will lead to great things and Kobe Bryant has shoved it in my face this year.   Yes, I’m a Clipper fan til death…  when the Lakers traded Shaq, they also lost a fan for life.   But I must give props to where props are due.  Kobe, your skills on the court are amazing… you’re still arrogant and I wouldn’t want to play with you but you have proved me wrong.   You are now a leader.  And that’s what I’ve learned.  There are many different types of leadership.

Nine years ago, many people said Kollaboration wouldn’t work and after endless nights, blood, sweat, and tears…  our last show had 2,000 people in attendance and was sold out two weeks before the show.   It felt good.  It felt really good.  When people say you can’t, all the more reason you can.

    11) Also I keep forgetting to thank DO KIM who made the KW Lee Spirit Award possible and nominated me.  DO Hyung, you are one of the true godfathers of Koreatown.   I give all my respect and props to you.   You studied in a small apartment in Koreatown, went to HARVARD, then UCLA Law and for most people, that would be extremely impressive.  However, what makes you different than most of the other people I know is, you CAME BACK to Koreatown to give back.  You went to Harvard.  You could have chased money, cars, fame, prestige...  but you kept it real.  You came back to help... to make a difference.   You work as a pro-bono lawyer who serves the underdogs in the community,  and you only make money if you win!   And you always win your cases!  You the man.  You're one of the true hyungs of Ktown and many people look up to you immensely.   Thank you Do for supporting Kollaboration and for believing in me.   If I ever win another award, I will not forget to Thank You.

“The Lost Ring is one of the most innovative, mysterious websites I’ve ever encountered. As an avid net connoisseur, I’ve visited a countless number of sites, and after an hour of interacting with the site, I’m amazed at how deep this site goes.  At first glance, I thought I was watching a movie trailer but I later realized, this is the future of the internet; an interactive alternate reality.  Alternate realities come in many forms, both positive and negative and this one is very positive.  As you search the site, you begin to understand the concept which utilizes every modern form of new media available including video clips and blogs which help you find clues to the overall secret of the The Lost Ring.  The most powerful aspect of the site is how it brings the world closer together as the only way to solve the puzzle is to work with people from different countries in order to accomplish the goal. Websites are essentially communities in various forms and this site goes for the jugular.  This is no ordinary site.”      www.thelostring.com

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up,
it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them..

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Statement on Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Chicago, IL  -- Senator Barack Obama today released the following letter commemorating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

    Dear Friends,

The month of May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a time to honor and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of the nearly 13 million Asian and Pacific Americans (AAPI) who have helped build a strong and vibrant America.  The APA community represents many ethnicities and languages that span across generations, and their shared achievements are an important part of the American experience. The APA story and community are also personal to me.  Members of my family are of Asian descent and it is a community that I became a part of while growing up in Hawaii and Indonesia and living in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.  APA Heritage Month reminds us of our commonalities in history, the values that bring us together and how Asian Pacific Americans will shape America's future.

Beyond acknowledging the contributions of the APA community, APA Heritage Month is also an opportunity for us to recognize the challenges we still face.  Our nation is at war, our planet is in peril, and for increasing numbers of Americans of Asian and Pacific descent, the American dream is in danger of slipping away. As President, I will work with the APA community to ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable and portable healthcare that will also reduce the language and cultural barriers that limit access to our medical system.  We will make sure the global economy works for APAs by fixing our public education system, making college affordable through an annual $4,000 tax credit, and equipping our workers with the skills and training they need to compete.  We will invest in renewable energy, which will ease our rising fuel costs while also saving our planet.  We will do more to support small businesses, including strengthening programs that provide capital to minority-owned businesses.  We will develop comprehensive immigration reforms that strengthen our security while affirming our heritage as a nation of immigrants, and reach.  We will restore our Constitution and the rule of law, including our commitment to human rights abroad and civil liberties at home.  Finally, we must forge a more effective regional framework for collective security in Asia and the Pacific to promote political and economic stability, confront transnational threats like terrorism and influenza, and collectively address environmental concerns.

With your support, I am confident that we can address these challenges.  I am thankful to the many leaders, campaign organizers and grassroots volunteers of Asian and Pacific descent across the country, who have
registered thousands of new voters, conducted phone-banking, organized canvassing trips, hosted political events, translated campaign materials into numerous Asian languages, and much more.  By reaching
out directly to the APA community, we can ensure that APAs are well represented in this national conversation about our future and the movement to write our destiny.

So, as we celebrate APA Heritage Month, let us honor the achievements of Asian Pacific Americans who have contributed so much to the success and prosperity of our nation, and who must be a part of our effort to change America.

The story of the APA community is quintessential American story about drawing strength from our diversity to achieve extraordinary things.  With your continued energy, enthusiasm, passion and activism, the change we seek is within reach.

    Sincerely,

    Barack Obama
