THE HOUSE OF SUH is a documentary film that unravels the complex and tragic history behind Andrew and Catherine Suh, and how the values, conflicts and dysfunctions of their Korean immigrant family led to the 1993 murder of Catherine’s fiancé, Robert O’Dubaine. Eloquently narrated by Andrew, the film highlights issues of assimilation and the struggle between freedom and responsibility, raising questions about guilt, innocence, and the illusive gray area in between.
The House of Suh crew – Gerry Kim (Co-Producer), Joseph Lee (Associate Producer/Editor), and myself (Iris K. Shim, Director/Producer) – have been producing the film for the past 3 and a half years. As Korean-American filmmakers, it is our goal to create a film that challenges stereotypes and instead provides an honest portrayal of an immigrant family, and the struggles that tore them apart.
Having completed shooting the interviews for the film last fall, my crew and I are getting ready to go into post-production. The film thus far has been funded almost entirely through a grassroots campaign, receiving a majority of its support from the
Korean American community in
Chicago, including screenings at various local Korean churches. However, with post-production costs being arduously expensive, we’re looking to expand our awareness/fundraising campaign to the Korean-American community in the
West Coast. I’d like to ask anyone who would be interested in hosting a screening or with any questions to contact me:
